Phil Pantano is photographer from Buffalo, New York. In a search for new methods to ‘read the city’, Pantano investigates the dynamics of landscape and industrial decay, including the manipulation of its effects and the limits of spectacle based on our assumptions of what decay means to us. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination.
His photos establish a link between the reality of industrial decay and that imagined by its conceiver. These works focus on finding the beauty in what was once the industrial backbone of America and the ruin that many of these sites have become.
His unique style is characterized by the use of dramatic lighting and detail in everyday objects to create a dark and moody atmosphere. With an interest in history and vintage films that allows him to explore his subject matter in a nostalgic way, his work draws the viewer into a world that is usually passed by.
